So, a lot of people wonder what exactly is glamour photography. It is a lot of things, and it is not a lot of things. It is not pornography. It is neither erotic nor nude. Although, it can incorporate both of those and still maintain classiness and style. It is celebrating the human form, the human emotion, expression, and soul. Glamour photography, while a lot of people associate it with boudoir or erotic photography, is anything but that (although at times it can go hand-in-hand with it). It makes sense that fashion photography sells clothes, it sells accessories, it sells product. Glamour photography sells you. It sells your soul, it sells your look, and it makes you look your absolute most glamorous and beautiful. A bit of a dictionary definition of glamour says that: "Glamour is the quality of fascinating, alluring, or attracting; especially by a combination of charm and looks. 2: excitement, adventure, and unusual activity: the glamour of being an explorer. 3: magic or enchantment; spell; witchery." Beauty photography is closely related to, if not virtually the same as, glamour photography. Beauty photography is a more modern version of glamour-style portraiture. The objective of a beauty session is to reveal your inner and outer beauty, your presence, your femininity or masculinity, and your personality. Glamour sets also aren’t about the props or location. These can be important, yes, but less so than for a fashion shoot. Glamour shots focus on physical beauty. Photographers piece together several different aspects in order to highlight that ethereal fairy tale beauty. From the wardrobe and makeup to lighting and post-processing. All the different elements work together to celebrate the subject’s beauty. Glamour photography also features, and focuses on, the subject's emotion and personality. Through body language and expression, an entire story can be told without elaborate props and wardrobes. The face is the most underrated and underutilized part of a glamour model. You either get the connection from the model to camera, or you utterly avoid it. In an ideal glamour image, there is instant connection to the subject. The best way to produce that connection is with the face, and specifically the eyes. Glamour photography can help build confidence, self-image, and self-expression. Unlike several other areas of photography, portraiture is personal. It is based on the interaction between the subject and photographer. Portrait photography is a conscious act that involves cooperation on the part of both subject and the photographer. With portraiture, the idea is to use the likeness to communicate something about the people in the portraits, their personality, their essence. For this reason, it is necessary to have a relationship between a photographer and a subject rather than a subject and a machine. Even if the photographer has a recognizable style and intends to use it, the portrait is still about the subject – and the photographer needs to communicate this to the subject. “Portraits reveal a desire for human connection,” McCurry writes. “A desire so strong that people who know they will never see me again open themselves to the camera, all in the hope that at the other end someone will be watching, someone who will laugh or suffer with them.” To me, photography is poetry with a camera. To me, photography is writing with light. To me, photography is putting human emotions, perspective, and soul into an image. It can also be fun. Because inside all of us is the desire to look our sexy best, and be a celebrity and the center of attention. The fantasy is real for all of us.
